Geometric Feature Extraction

The calculation of geometric features of a mechanical structure in Finite Element models allow and enable

  • the automatic (re-)labelling of relevant sections of parts and components,
  • the classification of parts and components,
  • the automatic identification of critical sections with failure risk.

Example of Curvature

The curvature describes how much the surface tangent vector changes. It can be evaluated on Nodes or Elements with several statistics (mean, maximum, minimum, etc.)

Example of Element Angles

The edge angle describes the angle between 2 elements.

Example of Deformed and Damaged Structures

Additionally to the initial shape, geometric features can also be extracted from the resulting deformed structures

  • for the automatic identification and classification of the failure modes and shapes.
